Camping and Baking... necessary for life and sanity
So the house on Steenbuck is no longer ours, and we now own a field. Yep, that's it. At this point, we just own a field... and a really old 19' 5th wheel. We have some wonderful friends however that have loaned us the use of their 20' trailer as well, so we are beginning our journey on the property with a gypsy camp caravan. We are exhausted from the move but it's July, the weather is beautiful and all is looking good.
I love camping. I really do. My idea of camping is a quite location, a couple of good books, a little bit of hand sewing or crochet and baking. These are my 'feel good' activities. Once I've done a little baking, my world feels better. It took a little bit to get there this time...
I think on about day 2, we got a phone call from our oldest daughter who had been waiting for a surgery date for quite a long time. She got a quick fill cancellation date. So a couple days later I peeled myself off the bed, tried to find some clothes to pack and headed to Agassiz to help with the kids.
Anna is so organized she had all the meals taken care of, so I got to play with the kids.... fold some laundry and 'mother' my 30 year old daughter a bit.... haven't been able to do that since her kids were born.
Once I got home it was time to get more organized.... especially because daughter number two, Beth was having surgery in another week and she would be coming out to join us to rest, recover and let us 'wrangle' her giant 2 year old who she would not be allowed to pick up for a while. Jed is 2 but looks like a 5 year old and weighs over 40 lbs. Fortunately, he is 'Gampa's' best friend.
The phrase 'It doesn't rain, but it pours' comes to mind.
So in the midst of all of this, yes, it was time to set up the outdoor kitchen and bake. I really really really needed to bake. When it comes to baking, there are categories. Cakes, Cookies, Bars, Pies, I love to make them all, but when I really want to enjoy the process, its bread dough... Having a huge lump of bread dough to turn into whatever you want is so incredibly satisfying. The only problem with baking is who is going to eat it all?! Yes, truthfully sometimes it is just Jim and I that eat it all. But usually, I hand it out fairly liberally around the family or neighborhood. So Cinnamon buns for the neighbors it was. :)
Baking done, equilibrium restored, ready for Beth and Jed to arrive.
